I once got employed in Khimji retail as Sales Supervisor. You will be damned if you join this company as a sales supervisor bcos most of you will end up as a manual labourer cum salesman in one of the retail outlets in Oman, even if you are made the Sales Supervisor (Sales Supervisor = Sales Executive + Manual Labourer) which is rare bcos the already established sales supervisors can work till they die. I was promised decent accomodation, work hours till 5 in the evening and extra pay for overtime. The interview process was so crafty that the paper in which the terms of employment till 5 in the evening was printed was subtly taken back. When you reach there you will be received in the airport and taken straight to the Head Office, next given accomodation in the Head Office complex. There are lot of flats and good bachelor accomodation with each room having 3 beds, etc in the Head Office Complex itself. If you work as an Assistant Accountant and above, then it is a good life, there will be good facilities including good veg food in the mess. This is good if you have no family with you, have some debts to settle or want some gulf experience. However, if you are sent as Sales Supervisor trainee to the existing Sales Supervisor's, they will all join together and destroy you bcos they view you as a threat to their existing job. The company hires english speaking sales supervisor trainees to actually work as sales representatives cum labourers in their different sales marts, they hire extra labourers in their marts from other contractors too but even that is not sufficient. They know that the newly employed trainees will be ill-treated but the ill-treatment will be more if you complain with the management joining in to suppress dissent, think of it as a hobby on their part. If you are thinking that Khimji retail marts are all big outlets, then it's not true. Only a few are big but they are not posh. If you compare reliance retail outlets, they are far better than most khimji ramdas retail outlets. After you check in at the Head Office, next your passport will be taken. The real hell starts when you are taken out of the Head Office to the retail outlet where you are assigned which will be many miles from the head office. Here you have to enter the job at 8 in the morning, do everything including manual labour, shifting rice sacks and cardboard cartons of various items kept in the shelf, carrying big water containers (If you donít have good health donít even think about this job). The tough part comes when you have to come back and cook for yourself and your existing supervisor and others. After you have finished lunch, it will be 4 in the evening. Then you will have to rush back to the store. The company in the beginning will hide all this, they will say that you will get good food from the Head office and if you make it yourself or take it from outside using a hotel mess, then the company will pay around 10 or 15 Omani Riyals for you. In Arab culture since they sleep in the afternoon they are awake very well into the night. This means that the shop will close at night after 12. After all this labour you will have to make dinner once more. You cannot make it and keep it earlier bcos of the Arab guys staying with you in the same flat. They are good people and one of the most decent guys on earth but since they are desert people - sharing food and hospitality are their strong points. They will sometimes eat up what you cook and taste what you have cooked and kept in the fridge by just putting in their hands and mixing some rice and curry in the main vessel itself. That is why we have to cook everytime before we eat if we are sharing bachelor's accomodation with them but trust me if you want they will share their food with you and they are harmless when compared to our guys. So, when you sleep it will be 2 in the morning of the next day. This routine continues for seven days a week. There will be a washing machine to wash your clothes. You will be thinking that it is a great thing but the problem is that everybody will wash their clothes when you are trying to put in your clothes into it. Add a bit of cheap politics, then you will never get permission from your supervisor to come back to your accomodation for this purpose. Even having tea or coffee in the morning or evening is not allowed. For covering this up in the beginning, they will put you in a store where there is tea and coffee in the morning and evening for training and suddenly you will be kicked out into a worse store. Before doing this the supervisor or Store Manager training you in the first store will give you subtle hints that he doesnít have breakfast, even though he lives royally in a private flat with his wife. This they do secretly to make their lower level employees in the stores to forsake breakfast. So, in effect you will be doing manual labour without having proper food. One M.B.A. guy from Kerala who was working with me got so thin after coming there that he had to put more holes in his belt holding his pants to keep it from falling down after a few months in Khimji Retail section. Manual labour and making a virtue of not having enough food at the correct time plus all round harassment was suffered by him bcos his family had a lot of debts to pay off. God knows wether he is still alive. Cheap politics is the biggest threat in Retail section bcos only 10th and 12th class pass and fail are the majority among Sales Supervisors and levels lower than him and these guys are from the most xenophobic regions and castes of India. Seeing highly educated guys training to take up their jobs, they do anything to stop them. Think of these guys as criminals having their photos put up for wanted in the police stations but mix a little bit of smile into them to get a true picture. Even their ordinary talk is abusive. Management brings in new folks as a means of keeping the older goons in their place who will be busy harassing the newcomers and will behave better fearing that they can be replaced. Thus, the management plays both sides of the coin. For workplace politics, in retail stores there are seperate informal sections. If you are a supervisor trainee who is an educated tamilian, then every uneducated guy will gang up against you. One or two good people will be there everywhere but they will be powerless to speak up for you. The manner of attacking you will vary according to the states. Khimji retail has a lot of sub-standard nairs ( A few decent nairs are also there.), who will prick on you based on your caste if you are a low-caste Keralite or if you belong to other states forgetting their past of being whorehouses for Brahmins for more than a thousand years - 12 Brahmins could keep a married Nair lady for a keep as per custom at the same time. Since Khimji is a Gujarati a lot of Gujarati's work in it, their manner of kicking you is indirect. They will talk sweetly to you, kick you everywhere behind your back and talk sweetly to you once more. Once more remember that these are the uneducated guys from Gujarat villages, one or two good guys are there in this group also. Marathi's will be more direct in harassing you. There have been rumors of people dying suddenly when they have resigned. Maybe they are rumors but if other people have committed suicide, then the Retail section if a really bad place to work in. If you are in a real bad financial situation then take up a job in the Retail Store section as a Supervisor or lower. Otherwise if you are educated and want to work in a good job in Oman and that too in Khimji, then try to get in the Accounts Section if you are an accountant or Marketing Section (posts higher than Sales Supervisor) which are based in the Head Office itself. These posts are handful and that's the real problem but Attrition is the rule in Accounts section too as about 5 guys were recruited with me for Assistant Accountant posts. One great disadvantage of working in Khimji Retail is that you will be unable to work in Oman after you resign from it. The company representative will come with you to the airport and can tell the airport authorities to bar your passport from checking into Oman. This you will know after you apply for another visa (visit or employment). In short your happiness is destroyed once you work in the lower levels in Khimji. Don't even think of complaining - From the Omani police to the Indian Embassy, these guys have roots everywhere. The more you complain, the more flak you will draw. It's like a devil's place - Once you check in, there is no checking out. I somehow escaped bcos of God's Grace.
